The W-43 Saga: Oldsmobile’s Experimental 32-Valve 455 V8
Oldsmobile’s experimental W-43 engine is surrounded in myth, legend, and a tall tale or two. Let’s see if we can sort it all out.
Here at Mac’s Motor City Garage, we’re grateful to the World Wide Web for rediscovering so many wonderful stories in automotive history and bringing them to public attention. Still, we have to note that that often, the info isn’t always totally accurate—which is only natural, we suppose. After all, the internet could be described as the biggest and longest game of Telephone in history.
Take this fascinating engine, for instance: the Oldsmobile W-43, an experimental V8 developed in 1967-69. Various sources have described this engine as a hemi (it isn’t) or a Can-Am engine (that was never its purpose) or a double overhead-cam design (nope). In truth, the W-43 was a conventional overhead-valve, pushrod V8, in the classic Motor City style, but with special cylinder heads and valvetrain that provided four valves per cylinder.
To the average car enthusiast, a four-valve head with pushrod operation—that is, each rocker arm and pushrod operating a pair of valves—may seem like an outlandish setup, but in the diesel truck world it’s fairly commonplace (Cummins and Detroit, to name two). It looks cumbersome but it works just fine, especially where high engine speeds are not required.
The W-43 was indeed based on a standard 455 CID production block, but with some key modifications, including four-bolt main caps and special valve follower retainers that bolted into the lifter valley. The spark plugs were buried in tubes in the center of the valve covers, which no doubt fed the stories that the engine was a hemi. Bore, stroke, and other significant specs were identical to the production 455 CID V8. There was also an aluminum-block variant of the W-43 designated the OW-43, and the program eventually produced an experimental four-cam, 32-valve V8 based on the production engine’s architecture.
With four valves per cylinder, the combustion chambers of the W-43 were not hemispherical but rather a classic pentroof layout, utilizing shallow valve angles in the Cosworth style. Intake valves were 1.75 inches in diameter and 1.375 inches on the exhaust, providing 43 percent more intake valve area than the production 455 two-valve heads. According to a feature in the May 1971 issue of Hot Rod magazine, the W-43 was good for 440 horsepower at 4600 rpm in a relatively mild state of tune. And given the improved volumetric efficiency enabled by the far greater valve area, that figure seems downright conservative.
Reportedly, the W-43 V8 was at one point considered as an across the board replacement for the standard two-valve 455 CID V8, but as we know, that never happened. Various theories have been proposed to explain why, including stricter emissions regulations and corporate infighting with the far more powerful Chevrolet division at General Motors. But as we see it, the four-valve version’s considerably greater size, weight, and manufacturing cost would have been more than sufficient to kill the program. At least two W-43 prototype engines still exist, one of them incomplete, but their current whereabouts are unclear.

Linda Darnell and George Sanders in Forever Amber (Otto Preminger, 1947)
Cast: Linda Darnell, Cornel Wilde, Richard Greene, George Sanders, Glenn Langan, Richard Haydn, Jessica Tandy, Anne Revere, John Russell, Jane Ball, Robert Coote, Leo G. Carroll, Margaret Wycherly. Screenplay: Philip Dunne, Ring Lardner Jr., Jerome Cady, based on a novel by Kathleen Winsor. Cinematography: Leon Shamroy. Art direction: Lyle R. Wheeler. Film editing: Louis R. Loeffler. Music: David Raksin.
Once a famous "dirty book," Kathleen Winsor's Forever Amber wouldn't raise eyebrows or blood pressures in the average book club of today, but it was one of Hollywood's hottest properties in the 1940s. The bidding war was won by 20th Century Fox, which followed the example of Gone With the Wind by announcing a search for the actress who would play the glamorously wicked Amber St. Clair. Though the part originally went to Peggy Cummins, producer Darryl F. Zanuck finally decided that she looked too young to play the mature Amber, and when she was sidelined by illness just as filming began, she was replaced by Linda Darnell. John Stahl, the original director, left the film at the same time, and Otto Preminger stepped in. He disliked the book and asked for a script rewrite, but Preminger also delighted in trying to get things past the censors, who were all over the project. The result is a middling costume drama with too much material from the book to fit comfortably in its two-hour run time. Amber is an ambitious lass raised in a Puritan household who, when Charles II is restored to the throne, latches on to a handsome Cavalier, Bruce Carlton (Cornel Wilde), and heads for London. When Carlton is commissioned as a privateer by the king (George Sanders) and sets sail, Amber, who is pregnant with Carlton's child, is left with a little money that gets swindled away from her and lands in Newgate, the debtors' prison. She gives birth, escapes from prison, makes a living by thievery, goes on stage, attracts the eye of the king, marries an elderly earl, nurses a returned Carlton through the plague, inherits the earl's fortune when he dies during the Great Fire, and becomes the king's mistress. All of this immoral behavior should mean, under the Production Code, that she gets punished accordingly, but somehow the movie manages to finesse that with only a little emotional stress at the end. Forever Amber got condemned by the Catholic church and banned in a few places, but it was evidently bowdlerized enough to survive and make money. The truth is, it's a little dull. It comes to life occasionally when Sanders is on screen being royally wicked, but Darnell, with a blonde dye job and wig, never gets a chance to do more than be cautiously wicked and suffer prettily. The Technicolor is also rather dark and muddy, although that may be the result of an aging print.

Citadel - a completely mediocre spy drama with very little new to tell....
Finished Citadel last night. Overall, a very ordinary show which is derivative of every spy movie or show that has been made in the past. Everything in the show is very surface level. I can completely believe all the news of production issues for this show because, while expensive looking in the action, it doesn't feel like the show justifies the budget. There are a bunch of sets that are reused. There are a handful of action sequences, but not even all that many. The run time of the episodes are fairly short. It feels like a show that was reshot multiple times and retrofitted. Frankly, the biggest issue with the show is how predictable it is. The show makes a big deal about who is the traitor that sold out Citadel to Manticore, but it isn't as if there are more than 2 suspects. The 2 leads are the only potential suspects and Nadia's secret is pretty easy to figure out. Which really leaves Mason. The reason for his betrayal is kind of half assed. Frankly, the only character arc that is somewhat interesting is Mason/Kyle's, given the ridiculous situation he's in. It isn't particularly well developed but at least the situation the character is in is interesting. He has 2 spy wives from Citadel with a daughter from each, one of whom is a woman whose memory he apparently wiped himself in order to protect the other. And he has memories of both Kyle and Mason. And he knows he's the one who sold out Citadel and that Dahlia is his mother. His situation is so bizarre that its almost comical. In that way, I am curious to see what he does. None of the characters stand out. Stanley Tucci was one the early highlights but he barely has a presence in the back half of the season. Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas both have a history of much better work in other shows. They have chemistry and do a decent job but their relationship is very half baked and rushed. I mean, I didn't like Quantico all that much, but Priyanka was honestly better on that show, and she has a history of much more nuanced work in Indian films. Richard Madden has done much more complex and interesting work in Eternals and Bodyguard in recent times. Apart from the leads and Tucci, Lesley Manville is the only actor that has any substantial screen time. She does fine but it isn't as if this role is a stretch for an actress of her caliber. Ashleigh Cummins as Abby/Celeste is decent but the possibility of what happens with her character in the future is more interesting than what actually happens this season. The action is fun and the show is relatively fast paced. Hopefully with season 1, the Russos have ironed out the production issues and they can make a better season 2.

36 Sports Cruiser, 36 Tournament Fisherman, 360 Commander
Model years: 1973 - 1986
Serial numbers: CCHMG, CCFMG and CCHDA
Number of hulls built: Estimate 300
Length x Beam: 36' X 13'Draft / Weight: 36" / 22,600 lbs
Built for many years, both in Florida and Michigan. In the early years the boat had 1-3/8" running gear. In 1981, the running gear was up-graded to 1-1/2" for gas and 1-3/4" for diesel. Major bridge redesign in 1984. A longtime favorite with fishermen and cruisers alike, the Chris Craft 36 Commander (called the 36 Sports Cruiser in 1973–77; 36 Commander in 1978–80; 360 Commander in 1981–86) enjoyed an unusually long production run, a rarity for Chris Craft boats of her era. (Indeed, well-maintained models retained their popularity on the used market for years after the last unit was built.) Introduced in 1973, she came standard with a two-stateroom, galley-up interior until 1984 when a more expansive single-stateroom floorplan with a dinette became standard (a queen bed option was available in the stateroom). Note that most 360s were sold with lower helms. Construction is solid fiberglass, and her low-deadrise hull generates good lift but produces a stiff ride in a chop. The original profile of the Chris Craft 36 remained pretty much the same until 1985 when the deckhouse and flybridge were restyled for a more rakish appearance. An increase in fuel capacity to 400 gallons in 1983 improved the range considerably. Standard 350hp gas engines cruise at 18 knots (mid 20s top). Cat 300hp (or 320hp Cummins) diesels bring the cruising speed up to 22 knots (26–27 knots top).

[ad_1] KL Rahul on Day 2 of Aus v Ind 1st test at Optus Stadium (Image: Debasis Sen) Andrew McDonald was enduring the pain with stoicism. At the press conference after the second day’s play between India and Australia, Australia’s head coach conceded that the hosts were “well behind the game.” As he had to do, McDonald added that things could change quickly on Day 3. Two wicketless sessions have put India in the ascendancy in the first Test. An unbroken 172-run opening partnership between KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal has all but slammed the door shut on the Aussies. Unless the tourists implode spectacularly early on the third day, this is their game to lose now. Out there in the middle, Pat Cummins tried everything to separate the Indian opening duo. He even gave Marnus Labuschagne a couple of overs. The latter worked up some pace – 135 kph. In zest, he ran on to the protected area of the pitch thrice, getting an official warning in the process. At the other end, Rahul was as cool as a cucumber. Even when the ball was rearing up and making him hop, he was getting the bottom hand off quickly. The opening partnership revolved around him, although Jaiswal outscored his senior. The pitch eased out considerably on the second day. But even on the first day, when 17 wickets fell, he was the best batsman on show. Rahul’s Test career of infinite highs and lows got another uptick in Perth and it begged the question, should he continue to open in this series? Dodda Ganesh thinks Rahul should. “Just have KL Rahul opening throughout the tour,” the former India seamer posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday. “For heaven’s sake don’t shuffle his spot again. He’s the best bet to handle the conditions with the new ball. Rohit can bat in the middle order.” He doubled down on it a day later, writing: “This opening partnership has to stay and Rohit will have to bat in the middle order. Hopefully, common sense prevails.” Karnataka bias? Unlikely. Rohit Sharma is expected to join the team in Perth in a day. But after missing the pre-series practice sessions and match simulations, he will go to the second Test in Adelaide, starting December 6, a little undercooked, notwithstanding that the skipper will play the tour game against the PM-XI in Canberra. The second Test is a pink-ball affair and the extra coat of lacquer on the ball will ensure more swing. Rohit had a forgettable home series against New Zealand, scoring just 91 runs in three Tests at an average of 15.16. He could be a little low on confidence. Now that Rahul has gotten into the groove, it could be counter-productive to change his batting position. Also, batting in the middle order and facing the older ball might lessen the degree of difficulty for Rohit, at a time when he desperately needs some runs. A gentle reminder, for the first six years of his Test career, Rohit was a middle-order specialist. Is the dressing-room thinking that way? This correspondent is not good at earwigging. But hierarchy is celebrated in Indian cricket. This is a reason why Karun Nair was dropped after scoring a triple-century in a Test against England. Rohit is the captain and he will choose his batting position. It’s unlikely that he will get a tap on the shoulder from the head coach, asking him to bat down the order. For More Sports Related Content Click Here Jaiswal and Rahul have added 172 runs for the first wicket. (PC: X.com) As for Rahul, a year ago, he scored a magnificent 101 against South Africa at Centurion, batting at No. 6. Then, against England earlier this year, as Virat Kohli was given a leave of absence, the 32-year-old scored 86 in the first innings in Hyderabad, batting at No. 4. A quadriceps injury ruled him out of the remaining matches of the series. At the start of the new season, the team management decided that Rahul would be the team’s designated No. 6 in Tests. He scored 68 off 43 balls against Bangladesh in Kanpur, batting in that position. He failed against New Zealand in Bangalore
– in a game where India were bundled out for 46 in the first innings – and was dropped for the next two Tests. Australia next, and as Rohit was unavailable, he was asked to open the innings. Rahul stood up to be counted. For far too long, the Indian team has used Rahul as a floater, a horses-for-courses batsman. Over the past four years, he has opened in 23 innings, played at No. 6 in eight innings and batted at No. 4 in two innings. Maybe, Rahul has done enough to earn a settled batting position.
